‘Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.’ – Luke 13:10-13.

A spirit of infirmity is one of satan’s [many] array of demons whose primary purpose is to afflict humanity with sicknesses, diseases and paralyses. The major target of this [kind of] spirits is to cause health problems in people’s bodies, and it uses various means to achieve its destructive purpose. While not all diseases, sicknesses and paralyses are a direct operation of the spirit of infirmity, most are connected to it either directly or indirectly. There are many health conditions which may be diagnosed using hi-tech medical gadgets but are simply incurable by medical means. Such health conditions can only be permanently cured by the supernatural power of God. It might be difficult for Americans and Europeans to accept this truth, but it is not for most Africans and Asians, who both believe in the supernatural even before they accepted the gospel.

3 Channels of Affliction by the Spirit of Infirmity

Direct invisible attacks from hell. It is a fact that the spiritual world is more tangible and controls the physical world. It is clearly stated in the book of Genesis chapter 1 verse 1 that ‘in the beginning, God created the heavens (the spiritual worlds) and the earth (the physical world). The enemy does [often] attack people’s health in the spiritual realm which eventually manifests in their physical bodies, these are the kinds of health conditions that defy medical or surgical solutions. ‘So satan went out from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.’ – Job 2:7

Unforgiveness and bitterness. The spirit of infirmity also gains entrance into people’s lives through unforgiveness or bitterness. When you refuse to forgive one who has offended you or you hold bitterness in your heart, this will open a doorway for infirmity to attack your body. In the prayer [format] taught the disciples by Jesus, He shows us that forgiveness is directly tied to deliverance. (Healing is deliverance from sickness, disease and paralysis, isn’t it?) Look carefully at the following scripture: ‘And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one’. – Luke 10:3,4

Abuse of the physical body, poor hygiene and gluttony. The human body is delicately designed by God, and just like a good manufacturing company has laws by which its products may be utilized maximally, the same way there are laws which God put in place to secure the well-being of the human body. Some of these are: Eating clean food, drinking lots of water (note: soda and alcohol are not the same thing as water), taking good rest, exercising your body and developing good hygiene. One other thing that opens the body to infirmity is gluttony or over-eating! ‘So they ate and were filled, for He gave them their own desire. They were not deprived of their own craving; But while their food was still in their mouths, the wrath of God came against them, and slew the stoutest of them, and struck down the choice men of Israel.’ – Psalm 78:29-31. Over-eating is a sinful habit that the devil likes to encourage, knowing that it takes your body out from God’s in-built protection (which medical science refers to as immunity) around your body and leaves it open for attacks.

Dealing Infirmity a Terrible Blow

‘When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.” – Matthew 8:16,17

Jesus delivers whoever believes on Him from the evil spirit of infirmity and its effects on the human body. His power is able to do what medical science cannot do and bring complete healing to your body. It is never God’s will for you or any of your loved ones to suffer diseases or sicknesses, which is the simple reason why Jesus’ earthly ministry was characterized by the casting out of demons and healing the sick, diseased and paralyzed.

Your Weapons of Deliverance from Infirmity

‘And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.’ – Luke 7:21

i. Divine authority, as given to every Christian by Jesus (See Matthew 28:18), is your number one weapon to bind and cast out the spirit of infirmity. The enemy recognizes spiritual authority, and will certainly submit when you exercise your authority over him. Learn to challenge and cast out any evil spirit that attempts to invade your body, life or home.

ii. The name of Jesus is loaded with so much spiritual potency and the devil cannot withstand it. The healing and deliverance miracles that Jesus did in His earthly days can be repeated today in His name. He gave us His name so that we can do supernatural exploits with it.
iii. Fasting is a temporary abstinence from food [and other bodily pleasures], is also a weapon that is effective in dealing with the spirit of infirmity especially in the life of someone who over-eats and seeks spiritual help.

Wisdom Keys to Effectively Rid Yourself of the Spirit of Infirmity

a. Make sure you are clean before God. Receive grace to forgive any offender and to release any bitterness in your heart because this provides a legal ground for the spirit of infirmity in your life. It is your duty to ensure your heart is pure and you’re li

b. Cast out the spirit with a word. Tell it to get out of your body or that of your loved one in Jesus name!

c. Work out your healing process. After the spirit is cast out, it is still necessary for the body to be healed. You can receive your healing by simple faith in God’s word (See Isaiah 53:4-7), or otherwise seek medical help. The important thing is that once the spirit of infirmity has been cast out [even it was sent from hell], healing for the physical body comes easily.
