‘Do not turn to mediums [who pretend to consult the dead] or to spiritists [who have spirits of divination]; do not seek them out to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.’ – Leviticus 19:31 AMP.
Divination is the [ancient] practice of seeking to foretell or foresee future events or discover hidden knowledge by the aid of demon spirits. A demon of this class is referred to as the spirit of divination. Divination was [and is still being] highly practiced in ancient Babylon, Egypt, Assyria, Persia, Greece and many other parts of the world. This was the common way people used to find out about future events or about the destiny of a new-born child. Divination also seeks to use lies and false belief to manipulate the future, by giving people false prophecies, which when believed and acted upon, will eventually find expression in their lives. All those who use divination are partnering with the devil to work against the kingdom of God and His righteousness on the earth.
The biblical opposite of divination is [the Spirit of] Prophecy. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to speak to us through prophecy if and whenever He wills (See 2 Peter 1:21).

Divination is Forbidden by God
God forbids His people from having any fellowship with divination, whether by direct practice or by receiving words from divination [spirits]. Those who receive the words spoken to them by someone who ‘prophesies’ by [a spirit of] divination open up their lives and destinies to other demon spirits. Every demon spirit, once it has a foothold in a life or a place, usually opens the door to every other different kind of spirits to enter in. The Bible shows us clearly never to accommodate the spirit of divination, and also shows how to deal with it.
‘It happened that as we were on our way to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination [that is, a demonic spirit claiming to foretell the future and discover hidden knowledge], and she brought her owners a good profit by fortune-telling.’ – Acts 16:16 AMP
Provoking God to Anger
There is the story of a king in Judah named Manasseh, who brought trouble upon himself and his entire kingdom because he used divination and practiced other diabolical abominations which God warned His people against.
‘He made his sons pass through the fire [as an offering to his gods] in the Valley of Ben-hinnom; and he practiced witchcraft, used divination, and practiced sorcery, and dealt with mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger.’ – 2 Chronicles 33:6 AMP.

Identifying the Spirit
The spirit [of divination] is very subtle and can only be identified by discernment.
Paul and his team encountered this spirit working through a young girl while on their way to pray. Amazingly, it was only Paul (yet it still took him some days) who was able to know the true source and nature of the spirit.
‘She followed Paul and us and kept screaming and shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God! They are proclaiming to you the way of salvation!” – Acts 16:17 AMP
One would have thought she was speaking by the Holy Spirit just because she mentioned God, but a true spirit of prophecy would have added that Jesus is the Son of God! This [subtle spirit of] divination carefully avoided calling the powerful name of Jesus!
‘She continued doing this for several days. Then Paul, being greatly annoyed and worn out, turned and said to the spirit [inside her], “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ [as His representative] to come out of her!” And it came out that very moment.’ – Acts 16:18 AMP
Paul [eventually] discerned the spirit and cast it out and it came out that very moment.
Your Weapons of Deliverance and Victory
i. The name of Jesus: A mighty weapon that no evil power can withstand. Demons must obey when Christians command because of the weighty power in the Lord’s name. ‘These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons.’ – Mark 16:17 AMP.
ii. Discernment. This is a key ingredient in successfully dealing with the spirit of divination [and many other kinds of demonic spirits]. You can get this in God’s shopping mall addressed at 1 Corinthians 12:10 and the price is prayer. ‘…Yet you do not have because you do not ask’. – James 4:2 NKJV
Wisdom Keys to Effectively Rid Yourself of Unclean Spirits
i. Repentance
If you have previously been involved with the spirit of divination and you know you are yet (or are willing) to be free, an important step to take is to go on your knees right now and repent before God. Ask Him for mercy and forgiveness and let Jesus’ precious blood wash you clean. ‘If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.’ – 1 John 1:9 NKJV.
ii. Use your divine authority
Jesus has given the Church authority over every kind of demon spirit. If you have been washed by His blood, then you should use your Christ-given authority and cast out the spirit [of divination] anywhere (even in your own life) and anytime you discern it. That is exactly what Paul did when he eventually discerned the spirit. ‘But as many, as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.’ – John 1:12 NKJV.
iii. Avoid the devil’s “prophets”
The discernment you have received from the Holy Spirit discerns not only demons but also humans who work with them. i.e. channellers, mediums, sorcerers, warlocks etc. Many bear the title of ‘prophet’ in order to deceive and exploit people. Such should be avoided because they do not serve Jesus and His righteous kingdom. ‘They have seen falsehood and lying divination, saying, ‘The Lord says,’ but the Lord has not sent them. Yet they hope and make men to hope for the confirmation of their word. Did you not see (make up) a false vision and a lying divination when you said, ‘The Lord declares,’ but it not I who have spoken?’ – Ezekiel 13:7 AMP.
