‘And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight.’ – Luke 7:21

The term, ‘evil spirit’ is a generic term for demons whose primary purpose is to cause evil in any way they can find. They cause [and encourage] a whole lot of evils like sicknesses, diseases, fights, accidents, violence, wickedness, abortion, miscarriages, drunkenness, adultery, idolatry, murder, barrenness and whatever they can do to cause pain, sorrow or regret.

Evil spirits work anywhere they can find sin and disobedience or rebellion against God’s laws, from the homes and streets of Africa to the streets of Asia and even to the streets of South America and North America. ‘Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.’ – Proverbs 14:34. These evil spirits have no regard for beauty, intelligence, social status, financial status, nationality, religious creed or one’s accomplishments. If there is sin in your life and disobedience against God, you will surely be ‘found attractive’ by evil spirits.

It is also possible to be a Christian and have evil spirits operating in your life. Some of the many possible reasons for this is unrepented sin, disobedience against God, and prayerlessness. However, it is not supposed to be that way. The early Christians were free from the afflictions of evil spirits, rather they were full of the power of the Holy Spirit who enabled them to walk in purity of heart and life, holiness, obedience and total consecration toward Jesus.

Walking in the power of the Holy Spirit sets you high above and far from demonic affliction or oppression of any kind. It guarantees you of supernatural protection and a life, home or marriage free of evil. It makes you immune to evil spirits’ attempts and manipulations to cause you pain, sorrow or regret.

Identifying When Evil Spirits Are At Work

The activities of these spirits can be easily identified or otherwise. It largely depends on the person dealing with these spirits. Some Christians are more discerning than others, while some have no discernment at all because they are yet to exercise their human spirits in that area. ‘For everyone who lives on milk is [doctrinally inexperienced and] unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a spiritual infant. But solid food is for the [spiritually] mature, whose senses are trained by practice to distinguish between what is morally good and what is evil.’ – Hebrews 5:13,14 AMP.

The Importance of Discernment

Discernment is the supernatural enablement of the Holy Spirit of God in your life helping you to know what cannot be physically evaluated with your five natural senses of sight, touch, taste, smell and hearing. You see, our five senses are limited in too many ways and they can be deceiving most of the time. This is why God freely gives to anyone who sincerely desires to be discerning of spiritual activity. Beyond deliverance and the casting out of demons, discernment is very crucial is walking with and yielding to the Spirit of God. To lack discernment is to miss out on many spiritual blessings and suffer the consequences of ignorance of spiritual activity of evil spirits in your life, home or environment. ‘Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment.’ – Proverbs 15:21.

Whatever the state of your discernment is, whether from zero-discernment or mid-discernment to effective discernment, the key is always learning to trust in the Holy Spirit and always on the alert to hear His voice especially when dealing with demons.

A Lesson in Dealing with Evil Spirits

‘And certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities – Mary called Magdalene out of whom had come seven demons.’ – Luke 8:2

Jesus was the One who found Mary and removed evil spirits from her. Mary had been attending the synagogue for years and not even the ruler of the synagogue or the scribes could discern that Mary had seven demons! Jesus was able to do this because He, being the Word of God made flesh, was full of the Holy Spirit.

You can do it too! Ridding people of evil spirits is not an exclusive preserve of theologians, [your] church pastors and board of deacons. It is for every child of God! Jesus said, ‘the spirits are subject to you.’ Yes, YOU! (See Luke 10:17,20).

Your Weapons of Deliverance and Victory

As a good soldier must be [armed and] conversant with his weapons for the battle, even so, you must know and put to use your [spiritually potent] weapons provided you by God.

1. The Word of God. The accurate knowledge of God’s word is very vital in dealing with demons. You must know that God’s Word has ‘given you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy.’ You are guaranteed supernatural protection because God’s Word goes on to say that ‘nothing shall by any means hurt you.’ (See Luke 10:19]. You need to realize there is a secret that the enemy have desperately and unsuccessfully tried to hide from many Christians for many ages, and the secret is that the devil with his demons are afraid of a real Christian. (See James 2:19). The secret is finally out!

2. The [Holy] Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is the One who reveals secret strategies to successfully cast out [some crafty and stubborn] evil spirits. You shouldn’t dare take on any attempt to cast out demons without asking for the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit. ‘But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the Kingdom of God has come upon you.’ – Matthew 12:29.

Wisdom Keys to Effectively Cast Out Evil Spirits

1. First, learn to discern. Ask in prayer, that the Holy Spirit would help you to be more discerning. This is vital because discernment exposes the operation of the demon and it’s hiding place/base of operation, only then will you be able to cast it out effectively. Once you know without a doubt that an evil spirit is at work, kick it out without wasting time.

2. Always remember [and release] the power in the Lord’s name. The power and authority in Jesus’ name are matchless and unequalled, so the demon will leave because [you call the name] of Jesus and not because of you. ‘Now John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name…’ – Luke 9:49 NKJV.
