How do you see yourself? What is your true self-worth? These are a questions that no one can answer for you. You have to answer them for yourself. You can’t ‘google’ the answer, neither can your friends and colleagues tell you, because they really don’t know you, and so they can’t define you.

Why self-worth is important

How you see yourself determines your outcome in life. A person who sees himself poor, unfortunate, helpless, defeated and broken will surely have it so.

Proverbs 23:7 states, “As he thinks in his heart, so is he.” Since how you see yourself affects every area of your life, it puts a responsibility on you to find out who you really are. You must cast aside every negative or abusive label that have been put on you in the past.

Building your self-worth requires you to take a journey to your source. I don’t mean your ancestry or race or tribe, and certainly I don’t mean your parents. I’m talking about your true source–GOD. Yes, GOD!

Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you… I sanctified you …I ordained you a prophet.” God planned your life before your parents met. You can only find your true worth from Him. You must see yourself as God sees you! (See Psalm 139:13-17)

How God Sees You

1) His beloved child

If you have been saved by believing in the blood Jesus shed to take away all sins, then God sees you as “holy, blameless and above reproach.” (See Colossians 1:22) Remember that the blood that saved you is very precious and costly (1 Peter 1:18,19) just because you are precious to God.

2) Destined for greatness and impact

As one who has been born of God, knowing your self-worth in God and walking in it puts you on the path to greatness. See Daniel 11:32.

3) A citizen of His heavenly kingdom

There is neither slavery, nor oppression, nor failure in God’s kingdom. You have access to duplicate heaven’s realities and make them constant in your life! Read Colossians 2:19.

4) A partaker of His divine nature

God’s divine is free of evil and wickedness. It cannot hate, there is no corruption in it and cannot be afflicted with sicknesses and diseases. His divine nature is also called Eternal life, which is already in you. See 2 Peter 1:4.

Knowing, acknowledging and retaining consciousness of this reality is enough to keep you healthy and mentally sound all your days on earth! Undefeatable wisdom and counsel is part of His divine nature and these are meant to find expression in you.

5) Blessed beyond curses and limitations

You are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Because the physical world is under the control and dominion of the spiritual world, knowing and staying conscious of the spiritual blessings you have make you undefeatable in life. (See Ephesians 1:3) A vital lesson!

Numbers 13:31-33 says, “But the men that went up with him said, ‘We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eats up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. There we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.'”

These men could not fulfill their destinies. They buried their potentials because of their ‘grasshopper-self-worth.’ The men saw themselves as losers even when they had not yet taken action. They became paralyzed, but not physically. Mental paralysis is worse than physical paralysis!

How they saw themselves (as grasshoppers, wimpy, losers, helpless, defeated) made them lose their inheritance in God. They failed their loved ones, their families, the whole nation of Israel, and to cap it all, they failed God!

The devil sees you as you see yourself in Christ, and life responds to you as such! You must win in your mind before you can win in life and destiny.

Engage the Wisdom of God with Key Biblical Counsel and Divine Strategy to Build Your Self-Worth

1) Ask God in prayer to show you who you really are.

If you have suffered abusive and negative words from people, especially your loved ones, ask the Lord to remove those things from your soul. Release them to God and allow Him heal your mind… And forgive! Then ask Him to speak to you and to reveal who he really fashioned you to be.

As you pray and open your heart and soul to God, He’ll touch your mind. You’ll begin to recall negative and abusive words or past events negatively affecting your self-worth. Ask Him to take them all away completely. Make sure you are deliberate about this! (See Philippians 4:6)

2) Meditate on God’s Word habitually.

Jeremiah 23:29 states, “Is not my word like a fire and like a hammer that breaks the rocks in pieces?” Yes, God’s Word is powerful enough to break the false identity the world and the devil has put on you.

False identities and poor self-worth rooted in the mind are destroyed by meditation on the truth of God’s Word. Meditation looks and sounds simple but understand it is a spiritual act and is therefore important. The Word of God you meditate on is much more powerful than the words you quote!

3) Believe what God reveals to you in prayer or in His Word.

Isaiah 7:9 says, “If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established.” Believe and say it to yourself again and again.

4) Deliberately avoid people, conversations, places and things that make you feel undeserving, worthless
or cheap.

Remember this always: You are destined for greatness because of what Christ has done for you!
