Do you want a cleaner, more powerful thought life? It must be infused by the flow of the Spirit for maximum growth and potential.

The blessed and wonderful Holy Spirit of God is not a kind of spiritual force floating all over the earth. The Holy Spirit is a person who dwells in human vessels and seeks to express Himself through them. Yes, if you are washed by the precious blood of the Lamb, God’s Spirit dwells in you and wants to express Himself through you!

However, it is really up to you whether you will make room for Him or not.

The Spirit of God in Your Thought Life

Romans 8:6-8 states, “For to be carnally (or naturally) minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law (or ways) of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”

Every Christian is expected to bear fruit for God’s Kingdom and make His love, kingdom and power known, but it is impossible to achieve all this without the Spirit of God.

Jesus, who is our pattern and example, never did anything without the Spirit of God. He began His ministry only after the Spirit of God descended upon Him when He was baptized by John in the Jordan River. When He ended His forty day adventure in the wilderness, and was about to begin His public ministry, He entered into a synagogue in Nazareth. Here’s what He said;

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” – Luke 4:18.

You are expected to pattern your life after Jesus, by giving room to the Holy Spirit to flow freely in your life… and through you to other people.

Clearing hindrances and making way for God’s Spirit

Hebrews 12:1 states, “…let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us…”

A filthy and negative thought life is a great hindrance to the flow of God’s Spirit in your life. A heart that is constantly occupied with filth, sexual images, fearful or violent images, unclean memories, negative words, doubt and unbelief cannot be a channel for the Holy Spirit of God.

The things that sponsor all these must be totally cut off from your life. Until that is done, the Spirit of God cannot move freely in your life!

What, and who, fills your thought life?

It is the devil’s delight to keep your thought life occupied with things that make the Spirit of God distant from you. The way the devil does that is by making sure you always set your eyes on sexual images, fearful or violent images. He also encourages you to listen to negative words or music that cause fear, unbelief and doubt. All these things grieve the Spirit of God and chase Him away from you. For this reason, God instructs you to avoid all these things. Your thought life is crucial to all aspects of your life!

Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it flows the issues of life.”

The Spirit of God is ever ready to flow freely and unhindered in your life and through you to others. He is holy and that’s why He is called the Holy Spirit. You could also call Him the Spirit of Holiness. It’s your holiness of life, beginning from your thought life, that attracts Him.

2 Timothy 2:22 states, “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

3 Steps to Sanctify Your Thought Life

Philippians 4:8 reads, “…whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there’s anything praiseworthy—meditate (set your heart) on these things.”

Sanctify your thought life. Remove filthy materials from your computer and smartphones. Don’t set your eyes and heart on sexual images, fearful sights and violent movies. Sounds difficult? Yes. But is it possible? Yes!

All you need to do is follow the three steps listed below.

1. Prayer

This is inviting God’s Spirit to come in and help you get rid of the things that hinder His free flow in your life! By prayer, kick out filth and not only that, but also unbelief! You see, unbelief and doubt are also hindrances to the flow of God’s Spirit. You have to ask God to help you pull down the stronghold of unbelief hindering God’s Spirit from operating maximally in your life!

Psalm 61:2 “From the ends of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

2. Feed Your Heart

With godly things such as God’s word. Your heart needs to be fed, just as you feed your physical body. Reading and meditating on God’s word is the best food you can give your heart! You need to realize that God’s word is living, and so it is powerful enough to destroy everything hindering His Spirit in your life. God’s word is also stronger than bleach and is able to wash off every defilement in your thought life.

Jeremiah 23:29 “‘Is not My Word like a fire?’ says the Lord. ‘And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?'”

3. Take Necessary Action Steps

As you pray and feed your heart on God’s word, you also need to decisively do what God tells you to do. Be very observant, because as soon as you begin to pray, God has started responding to you! As God supplies you with His grace, distant yourself from those things that corrupt your though life! Decide to walk with God and to totally yield to His Holy Spirit by walking in purity of heart, walking in the light, obeying Him and developing your faith in God! As you take these action steps, be assured that your thought life will experience great positive changes!
